1780 The Derby Stakes horse race is inaugurated over a distance of one mile at Epsom. The race is won by Diomed.
1783 First free-flight balloon ascent made by de Rocier and d’Arlandes in Paris
1784 The distance of the Derby is increased to 1 1/2 miles.
1784 First ploughing match held at Odiham,Hampshire
1784 First balloon ascent in Britain made by James Tytler in Edinburgh
1785 First flight across the English Channel made by Blanchard and Jeffries in a hydrogen balloon
1787 first cricket match at Lord’s.Middlesex v Essex at the Dorset Square ground
1787 Marylebone Cricket Club (the MCC) play their first match against Islington cricket club
1788 A horse called Meteor wins his 21st successive race
1789 Several “cutter clubs” for rowing known to exist on the River Thames
1790 First time a steeplchase is held at a horse race meeting (Roscommon,Ireland)
1791 Competitive swimming races were organised in Britain
1791 The celereifere, a forerunner of the bicycle, is demonstrated in Paris
1793 “Field Tennis” is mentioned in the “Sporting Magazine”
1796 First inter-school cricket match: Westminster v Eton played at Hounslow Heath
1796 First swimming club,Uppsala Simsallskap in Sweden, founded by Jons Svanberg
1797 first parachute descent made by Andre-Jacques Garnerin over Parc Monceau,Paris
1798 A court used for the game of rackets is sold at Southernhay,Exeter
1799 First gymnasium opened by Franz Nachtegall in Copenhagen
