Golf: Ryder Cup Records

The first Ryder Cup took place in 1927 between Great Britain and the USA. From 1973 to 1977 Irish golfers joined the British team. In 1979 the match became one between Europe and the USA.

Team Records

The USA have won 25 of the 39 matches they have played, winning 18 out of 22 against Great Britain and Ireland. Since 1979 Europe have won 9 of the 17 contests. There have been two ties, in 1969 and 1989.

Of the 900 individual matches at the Ryder Cup the USA has won 441, lost 335 and halved 124.

The biggest margin of victory was in 1967 when the USA won by 23 1/2 to 8 1/2 in Houston.

The fewest points scored by a team was when Great Britain lost by 11 points to 1 in 1947 at Portland.

Under the present format the biggest winning margin has been 18 1/2 to 9 1/2 achieved by the USA in 1981 at Walton Heath and by Europe in 2004 at Oakland Hills and 2006 at the K Club.

Thanks for your comments. I’m glad that you found the records interesting. Researching this brought back some memories of previous Ryder Cups. I was lucky enough to go the final day of the 1985 Ryder Cup when Europe won for the first time in 28 years.

Back then it was much easier if you wanted to be there. I thought about going before the Cup started and when Europe were winning after the first two days I decided I would go. My Dad and I went along on the final day, bought tickets at the course and watched Europe win. These days you have to buy tickets a year or more in advance!
