Australia’s Greatest Sportswomen

A poll conducted in early 2013 to choose Australia’s Top 100 Sportswomen of All Time. These are the top 25 with my notes on the Top Ten. I think this is a pretty fair selection. I know about all of the Top Ten and agree with the choices. I would possibly have Jackson a little lower and McKay higher but I think it’s a fair reflection.

  1. Dawn Fraser (one of the greatest ever swimmers. The first woman to win the same swimming event at three Olympics. Set 15 world records in individual events)
  2. Betty Cuthbert – (winner of gold medals at 100m, 200m and 400m at the Olympics.)
  3. Layne Beachley (7 time world surfing champion) & Margaret Court (winner of 66 tennis Grand Slam titles, 26 at singles)
  4. Lauren Jackson (one of the best women basketball players -3 times most valuable player in womens NBA)
  5. Heather McKay (unbeaten for 18 years at squash including 16 British Open titles)
