Baseball’s Greatest Teams In History

This is always a topic which causes great debate among baseball fans.

The most definitive article on the subject I have seen is in Baseball Almanac.

This is Baseball Almanac’s verdict for teams from 1902 to 2005. See here for the full article

Rank Team
1 1927 Yankees
2 1939 Yankees
3 1907 Cubs
4 1932 Yankees
5 1902 Pirates
6 1910 Athletics
7 1905 Giants
8 1998 Yankees
9 1906 Cubs
10 1929 Athletics

Here are rankings from the age of 1961-2005.

Rank Team

4 1995 Indians
5 1969 Orioles
6 1975 Reds
7 1984 Tigers
8 1961 Yankees
9 1986 Mets
10 1966 Orioles

Sports Illustrated’s Tom Verducci agreed that the 1927 were the best, followed by the 1939 and 1998 Yankees.

Other sources that I have seen have made claims for the 1939 Yankeees and the 1975 Reds as the best.

The best win-loss records over a season and the ultimate fate of those teams can be seen here.

Year Franchise League W L Percentage Finish
1906 Chicago Cubs NL 116 36 .763 Lost 1906 World Series
1902 Pittsburgh Pirates NL 103 36 .741 National League Champions
1886 Chicago White Stockings NL 90 34 .726 Lost 1886 World Series
1909 Pittsburgh Pirates NL 110 42 .724 Won 1909 World Series
1954 Cleveland Indians AL 111 43 .721 Lost 1954 World Series
2001 Seattle Mariners AL 116 46 .716 Lost 2001 ALCS
1927 New York Yankees AL 110 44 .714 Won 1927 World Series
1886 Detroit Wolverines NL 87 36 .707 2nd place in National League
1897 Boston Beaneaters NL 93 39 .705 Lost 1897 Temple Cup
1907 Chicago Cubs NL 107 45 .704 Won 1907 World Series

No team since 2005 has been good enough to enter the lists of the greatest teams so I have to agree with the general consensus and take the 1927 New York Yankees as the greatest team.
