The Greatest Long-Track Speed Skaters

There are a host of different championships these days for speed-skating which makes it hard to compare with long ago when there were only Olympic and world all-round championships.  The world all-round championships first took place in 1889, Olympisc in 1924, world sprint championships in 1970 and world single distance championships in 1996.

An excellent site for finding out about speed skating history is SpeedSkating Stats.com which provides my information and the links for the skaters which can be clicked on.

For the events on the current Olympic programme these are the skaters who have been the best in world and Olympic Games at each distance according to my system of years ranked first (half a point for years when not every title was won). This is to make a fairer comparison over the decades to take account of the increased number of titles now available.  For years before the individual distance world titles came in I will take the results from world all-round and Olympic championships as a guide.
