Olympic Canoeing Records

Olympic Canoeing is divided into the distinct sports of slalom and flat water canoeing

Slalom canoeing has only been contested in 1972 and from 1992 onwards.


Most gold medals

Men’s K1 3 – Tony Estanguet (France) 2000,2004,2012

Men’s  C2 3 Pavol and Peter Hochschorner (Slovakia) 2000-08

Men’s C1  has eight canoeists each with one gold.

5 Michal Martikan (Slovakia) at K1 from 1996 to 2012 (2 gold)


Flat-water canoeing

Most golds

6 Gert Fredriksson (Sweden)  (5 in individual  K1 events) between 1948 and 1960

4 Ian Ferguson (NZ) in K1,K2 and K4 in 1984 and 1988

4 Ivan Patzaichin (Romania) in C1 and C2 from 1968 to 1984


Most medals

The 200m distance was introduced in 2012 and Yuriy Cheban (UKR) has won the C1 twice the only gold medal winner at both Games at the distance at any event.

Flat-water canoeing

Most gold medals

Birgit Fischer-Schmidt (GDR/Germany) won a record 8 golds and 14 medals in total between 1980 and 2004 at K1 (two golds0, K2 and K4.

Danuta Kozak (Hungary) has won 5 golds in 2012 and 2016 where she became the only woman to win golds at K1,K2 and K4 events at the same Games.

Katrin Wagner-Augustin (Germany) won four gold from 2000 to 2008 in K2 and K4.


In 200m sprint canoeing Lisa Carrington (NZ) has won golds at K1 in both 2012 and 2016.
